Why Your Microneedling Results Depend More on the Provider Than the Device

Dina — Licensed Aesthetician, Dash Medical Spa 638 E Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach · Published June 2026

Search for microneedling and you'll find a lot of content about devices — which pen is best, FDA-cleared vs. not, needle count, speed settings. Device quality matters. But in my experience, it's not what separates a good microneedling result from a disappointing one.

What separates them is the person holding the device.

Microneedling is one of those treatments where the margin between undertreated and properly treated is entirely in the provider's hands. The device creates the mechanism. The provider determines the outcome. This guide explains why — and what to look for when you're choosing where to go.

Quick answer: Microneedling works for most skin types and tones — it is not light-based, so it doesn't carry the sun exposure restrictions of IPL. At Dash Medical Spa in Delray Beach, microneedling is $325 per session, or $850 for a series of 3 (saving $125). Most clients need 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for meaningful results.

What Microneedling Actually Does

Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin using fine, rapidly oscillating needles. The body responds to these injuries the same way it responds to any wound: by triggering a healing cascade that produces new collagen and elastin.

Over weeks and months, this remodeling process improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of acne scars and enlarged pores, softens fine lines, and produces a general improvement in skin quality and firmness.

The key word is controlled. The injuries need to be deep enough and dense enough to trigger a meaningful healing response — but not so aggressive that they cause prolonged inflammation, damage, or scarring. That calibration is not automatic. It requires judgment.

Why the Device Is Only Part of the Story

We use SkinPen at Dash — the first microneedling device to receive FDA clearance for safety and effectiveness. It uses a sterile, single-use cartridge and a consistent needle delivery mechanism. These things matter because they reduce the variables a provider has to work around.

But here's what the device doesn't control:

  • Needle depth. Depth is adjusted by the provider based on the area being treated, the concern being addressed, and what the skin is showing them in real time. The face is not uniform — the forehead, cheeks, nose, and periorbital area all require different settings.
  • Pass count and pattern. A single pass at the correct depth is not the same as multiple passes. The number of passes, the direction, and the overlap pattern all affect the density of the treatment and the result.
  • Pressure and angle. Even with a motorized device, hand pressure and angle affect how the needles engage the skin. An inexperienced provider tends to be inconsistent — lighter in sensitive areas, inconsistent in overlap — which produces uneven results.
  • Reading the skin's response. During treatment, the skin shows you what it's doing — erythema patterns, pinpoint bleeding, tissue response. An experienced provider reads these signals and adjusts. A provider following a fixed protocol ignores them.

What Under-Treatment Looks Like

Most providers err on the side of caution. Shallow depth, fewer passes, conservative settings. The rationale is understandable — the risk of over-treating is visible and immediate, while under-treating just means the client doesn't get the result they paid for.

Under-treatment is the most common reason clients come to us after a disappointing experience elsewhere. The session happened. The skin was red for a day. Nothing changed.

Under-treated session
  • Minimal redness, resolves in hours
  • Skin feels mildly sensitive day-of
  • No meaningful downtime
  • Little to no visible improvement at 4–6 weeks
  • Client questions whether it worked
Properly treated session
  • Significant redness, 24–48 hours
  • Skin feels tight, warm, sensitive for 2–3 days
  • Peeling or dryness through day 3–4
  • Visible texture and tone improvement at 4–6 weeks
  • Sustained improvement with subsequent sessions

A properly treated microneedling session has real downtime. Not dramatic, not alarming — but your skin will tell you something happened. If you walk out looking completely normal and feel fine by morning, the treatment was likely too conservative to produce the structural change you came in for.

The Provider Confidence Factor

Confidence in this context is clinical, not personality. It means a provider who has done enough treatments to trust what they're seeing in the skin, to push depth where depth is warranted, and to complete the treatment at the level that will actually move the needle.

This isn't something you can verify from a website or a price list. The questions worth asking when you're evaluating a provider:

  • How many microneedling treatments do you perform per month?
  • Do you adjust depth by zone, or use a single setting for the whole face?
  • What does a properly treated session look like the next day?
  • What results should I realistically expect after one session vs. three?

A provider who can answer these specifically — not generically — has the clinical experience to back it up.

Realistic Results and Timeline

One session is not a treatment plan. Microneedling works through cumulative collagen remodeling. The structural improvements that matter — scar reduction, pore refinement, skin firmness — develop over multiple sessions and months, not days.

For most skin quality concerns, a series of 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is the standard starting point. For more significant acne scarring, 4–6 sessions may be appropriate. Results continue to improve for up to 3 months after the final session as collagen remodeling completes.

What to Expect After Treatment

Day 1
Significant redness and warmth — similar to a moderate sunburn. Skin feels tight and sensitive. Avoid makeup, active skincare, and sun exposure.
Day 2–3
Redness begins to settle. Skin may feel rough, dry, or show mild flaking as the healing process progresses. Gentle cleanser and moisturizer only.
Day 4–5
Most clients are comfortable returning to normal activity and mineral makeup. Skin looks clearer as inflammation resolves.
Week 2–3
Initial texture and glow improvement visible as skin normalizes. This is surface-level — the deeper collagen work is still in progress.
Week 4–6
Meaningful improvement in texture, pore appearance, and skin tone. Next session can be scheduled. Results continue improving through week 8–12.
After series
Full cumulative result visible 2–3 months after final session. Maintenance sessions once or twice per year sustain results.

Who Is a Good Candidate

Microneedling is one of the more inclusive skin treatments because it is not light-based. It works across a broad range of skin tones and types without the Fitzpatrick restrictions that apply to IPL or some lasers.

Good candidates are dealing with:

  • Acne scars — especially rolling or boxcar scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and early skin laxity
  • Uneven texture or rough skin surface
  • Dull or tired-looking skin tone
  • Mild sun damage

Microneedling is not appropriate for active acne breakouts — treatment over active lesions can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation. Clients with active acne are better served by treating the acne first, then addressing scarring once the skin is stable. We assess this before scheduling.

Microneedling vs. Laser Resurfacing

Both improve skin texture and quality, but they work differently and suit different concerns and skin types. If textural concerns are your primary goal, fractional laser resurfacing may produce more dramatic results in fewer sessions — with more downtime.

Factor Microneedling Laser Resurfacing
Mechanism Physical micro-injury, collagen induction Thermal energy, controlled skin resurfacing
Best for Texture, acne scars, pores, early lines Deeper lines, significant texture, laxity
Skin types Most skin types and tones Varies by device and settings
Downtime 2–4 days 5–7 days depending on depth
Sessions Series of 3–6 1–3 sessions
Sun restriction 2 weeks post-treatment 4–8 weeks post-treatment

For clients in South Florida with significant sun damage alongside textural concerns, the sequencing of treatments matters. We build a plan before recommending either.

Cost

At Dash, microneedling with SkinPen is $325 per session. A series of 3 is $850 — saving $125 off the per-session rate. For acne scarring or significant texture concerns where 4–6 sessions may be needed, the series pricing makes the most sense financially.

We see clients from Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, Deerfield Beach, and throughout Palm Beach County.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many microneedling sessions do I need?

For general skin quality improvement, most clients see meaningful results after 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. For acne scarring or more significant textural concerns, 4–6 sessions may be needed. One session produces temporary improvement but not lasting structural change.

What is the downtime after microneedling?

Expect 24–72 hours of redness, tightness, and sensitivity — similar to a moderate sunburn. Skin may feel rough and dry through day 3–4. Most clients are comfortable in public within 48–72 hours with mineral makeup. A properly treated session should not leave prolonged redness beyond 3–4 days.

Is SkinPen better than other microneedling devices?

SkinPen is the first microneedling device FDA-cleared for safety and effectiveness, using a sterile single-use cartridge and consistent depth mechanism. Many lower-cost devices lack this clearance and precision. Device quality sets a floor — the provider's technique determines the ceiling of your results.

Can microneedling help with acne scars?

Yes — it's one of microneedling's strongest applications. Rolling and boxcar scars respond well to a series of properly performed treatments. Ice pick scars are more resistant and may require combination approaches. We assess scar type during consultation to give you an honest projection of what's achievable.

When will I see results?

Initial glow and surface texture improvement is often visible within the first week. Deeper structural improvements — collagen remodeling, scar reduction — develop over 4–12 weeks after each session. The full result of a series is typically visible 2–3 months after the final session.

Who is not a candidate for microneedling?

Clients with active acne breakouts, active skin infections, certain blood-thinning medications, or keloid-prone skin should not undergo microneedling. Active acne should be treated first — we address scarring once the skin is stable.
