Bottom Line

Where SkinPen makes the most sense

SkinPen microneedling is best suited to gradual improvement in skin texture, enlarged-looking pores, fine lines and mild-to-moderate facial acne scarring through the skin’s natural remodeling response.

One treatment can make sense for general skin quality or for someone who wants to start conservatively. More established texture and acne scars usually make more sense as a series. SkinPen is not our first choice when the main goal is brown-spot removal, visible vessels or redness, significant skin laxity, or deeper scars that may benefit from a stronger resurfacing approach.

One visit can make sense A reasonable option for general skin quality, early texture changes or clients who want to see how their skin responds before committing to a series.
A series has a different purpose Three treatments are more commonly considered when acne scars, established texture or more meaningful collagen remodeling are the goal.
Know the limitation SkinPen is a collagen-remodeling treatment. It does not replace pigment treatment, vascular treatment or more aggressive resurfacing when those are the better match.
Treatment Goals

What clients consider microneedling for

Microneedling is usually considered when the goal is gradual improvement in skin texture, scarring, pore appearance or early textural aging. The provider will determine whether SkinPen, laser, peels, PRF or another option better matches the goal.

FDA-Cleared Indication

Facial Acne Scars

SkinPen is cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older. Acne-scar treatment is commonly planned as a series.

FDA-Cleared Indication

Neck Wrinkles

SkinPen is also cleared for the appearance of neck wrinkles in specified Fitzpatrick skin types.

Common Cosmetic Goal

Uneven Texture

Clients may discuss SkinPen when roughness, mild textural aging or uneven-looking skin texture is a priority.

Common Cosmetic Goal

Pore Appearance

Microneedling may be discussed when enlarged-looking pores are part of a broader texture or skin-quality concern.

Common Cosmetic Goal

Fine Lines

For early fine lines or mild crepey texture, the provider may compare SkinPen with laser resurfacing, peels or other options.

Skin Quality

Gradual Skin Remodeling

Microneedling is not an instant filler or resurfacing shortcut. The goal is gradual improvement as the skin responds and remodels.

How SkinPen Works

Controlled microneedling designed for gradual remodeling

SkinPen uses a sterile disposable cartridge containing fine needles that move rapidly to create controlled microscopic punctures in the treatment area.

As these microscopic channels heal, the skin goes through a natural remodeling process. Treatment depth is selected according to the treatment area, concern, skin condition and provider assessment.

01
Sterile single-use cartridge

A new disposable cartridge is used for each treatment.

02
Adjustable needle depth

Depth is selected according to the treatment area and skin assessment.

03
Not RF or laser resurfacing

SkinPen is mechanical microneedling. It does not use radiofrequency heat or laser energy.

04
Improvement develops gradually

Visible change occurs over time as the treated skin remodels.

Your Appointment

What a microneedling appointment is like

Treatment begins with a skin and medical-history review. The exact process may vary depending on the treatment area, concern, numbing needs and provider assessment.

01
Skin review and candidacy

We review your concerns, current skin condition, medical history, medications, previous treatments and healing history.

02
Cleansing and topical numbing

The treatment area is cleansed and a topical anesthetic may be used to reduce discomfort.

03
SkinPen treatment

The provider selects an appropriate depth and moves the device systematically across the treatment area.

04
Aftercare instructions

You receive guidance regarding cleansing, skincare, makeup, exercise, sun exposure and the expected healing response.

Expected Healing

What the first few days may look like

Responses vary by treatment area, settings and individual healing. The following is a general guide rather than a guarantee.

Treatment Day

Redness and sensitivity

The skin may appear flushed and may feel warm, tight, tender or sensitive.

Days 1–3

Dry or tight skin

Redness, dryness, rough texture, tightness, itching or mild sensitivity may continue.

Following Days

Possible peeling

Mild flaking, scaling or roughness can occur while the treated skin settles.

Following Weeks

Gradual remodeling

Results are not immediate. Visible improvement develops gradually over time.

Actual Client Result

Improvement should look gradual—not artificial

SkinPen does not fill scars or erase pores immediately. The goal is gradual improvement in the appearance of the treated skin as remodeling takes place.

Acne-scar improvement frequently requires a series. The depth and type of scarring influence whether SkinPen, fractional laser, another treatment or a combination plan is more appropriate.

Comparing Your Options

SkinPen, RF microneedling, laser resurfacing or chemical peel?

These treatments work differently. The right choice depends on the concern, current skin condition, treatment intensity, downtime and whether the main issue is scarring, texture, pigment, fine lines or overall skin quality.

Energy-Based Microneedling

RF Microneedling

Method: Microneedling combined with radiofrequency heat energy.

Often considered for: Firmness, deeper remodeling goals and selected texture concerns.

Note: SkinPen is not RF microneedling. We explain the difference if you are comparing options like Morpheus8.

Laser Resurfacing

Fractional Laser

Method: Uses fractional laser energy.

Often considered for: Texture, selected scars, fine lines and stronger resurfacing goals.

Healing: May involve more visible redness, roughness or surface healing depending on the settings.

Surface Renewal

Chemical Peels

Method: Uses selected peeling agents to treat the surface layers of the skin.

Often considered for: Dullness, congestion, superficial pigment and mild texture concerns.

Note: Peels and microneedling are not the same. The better starting point depends on the skin.

Our Opinion

SkinPen is a strong starting point for the right kind of goal

If texture, enlarged-looking pores, mild-to-moderate acne scarring, fine lines or general skin quality are the main goals, SkinPen is a very reasonable starting point when you want gradual collagen remodeling without radiofrequency heat or laser energy.

One treatment can make sense for general skin quality. Acne scars and more established texture usually make more sense as a series. If deeper scars or stronger resurfacing goals are the priority, we may recommend fractional laser or another approach rather than simply selling more SkinPen sessions.

Individual skin review Treatment selection is based on the actual concern and current skin condition.
Clear treatment plan We explain the likely number of sessions, expected healing and limitations.
Packages are optional A series can make sense for some goals, but you do not need to buy a package in order to start with one treatment.

Other options we may discuss

If microneedling is not the best match for your skin, we may discuss another treatment based on whether the concern is texture, pigment, redness, acne, dullness or deeper resurfacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before booking microneedling

What is SkinPen microneedling?
SkinPen is a prescription microneedling device that uses a sterile disposable needle cartridge to create controlled microscopic punctures in the treatment area.
How much does microneedling cost?
SkinPen microneedling is $350 for the face or $399 for the face and neck. Optional packages of three are $945 for the face or $1,079 for the face and neck. Packages are not required and are not booked directly through Square. PRF options are priced separately.
How many microneedling treatments will I need?
The number depends on the concern and expected improvement. Facial acne-scar treatment is commonly planned as a series rather than a single visit. Your provider will recommend timing after evaluating the skin.
What does microneedling feel like?
Clients may feel vibration, pressure, scratching, prickling or minor discomfort. Topical numbing may be used before treatment to improve comfort.
How much downtime should I expect?
Redness, warmth, tightness, dryness, rough texture, sensitivity, itching or peeling may occur. These responses usually improve over time, but the duration varies.
Can microneedling improve facial acne scars?
SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older. Results vary according to the scar pattern, skin and treatment plan.
Can SkinPen be combined with PRF?
PRF may be discussed as a separate adjunctive treatment when clinically appropriate. It is not part of SkinPen’s FDA-cleared indication, and pricing is confirmed before booking.
Is SkinPen the same as RF microneedling or Morpheus8?
No. SkinPen is mechanical microneedling. RF microneedling devices combine microneedling with radiofrequency heat energy. The better option depends on the skin concern, downtime, treatment depth and candidacy.
Does microneedling treat pigmentation?
We do not position SkinPen as a primary pigmentation treatment. Pigment concerns require an individual assessment because microneedling can also cause temporary lighter or darker pigment changes in some people.
What should I avoid after treatment?
Follow the provider’s instructions regarding skincare, cleansing, makeup, exercise and sun exposure. Avoid sweaty exercise and significant sun exposure during the early healing period.
Where are appointments available?
Dash Medical Spa serves clients from Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and nearby Palm Beach County. Confirm the current appointment location when scheduling.
